The questions that we ask ourselves direct our attention to different aspects of our experience, steering it for good or for ill. The Core Question is a fundamental question that someone continually asks unconsciously, organizing and directing experience in ways that can be both enabling and limiting—a powerful determinant of our skills, attitudes, and limitations. In this presentation Steve Andreas first describes how to elicit the core question, and then demonstrates how to examine it, using an extensive checklist of content-free structural elements. Then he demonstrates with a volunteer how to experiment with different changes in the core question, using the client’s verbal and nonverbal response as a guide to which changes are more enabling and empowering. Includes 5-page handout with checklist. Recorded at the Milton Erickson Foundation Brief Therapy Conference, December, 2006
